  • Cardioprotective action
  • Improvement of functional status
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a natural anti-oxidant compound whose main function is to produce energy. CoQ10 is considered as a potential effective factor for the prevention of heart failure, as well as for the protection of patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases in addition to conventional treatment. In addition, there are indications that this compound may contribute positively to the prevention of migraine. Olea europaea leaf extract is rich in bioactive compounds including phenols, while its prominent constituent is oleuropein, an anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory compound. Based on its chemical characteristics and biological properties, olive leaf extract exerts cardioprotective and hypoglycemic action, having beneficial effects for human health. Moreover, it exerts anti-hypertensive action reducing blood pressure, as well as LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides with a parallel reduction in coronary heart disease risk. Vitamin Β9, commonly known as Folic acid, is essential to the development of the nervous system, while it is a potential agent for the treatment of the endothelial dysfunction decreasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Specifically, folic acid contributes to the metabolism of amino acids and is essential for the metabolism of homocysteine, preventing an increase in its levels in the blood and reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Vitamin B12 or well known as cyanocobalamin, is a B-complex vitamin, which is vital for the normal function of the nervous system, the formation of red blood cells, but also for the synthesis of DNA. While its deficiency causes neurological, hematological effects and can affect mood. Vitamin E, mainly in the form of α-Tocopherol, is an essential nutrient with anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory action. According to studies, Vitamin E has a protective effect against the onset or complications of the development of cardiovascular disease, which is a group of disorders related to vascular and cardiac function, such as heart failure, myocardial infarction and atherosclerosis. Moreover, this vitamin is considered to have a neuroprotective effect that is of utmost importance for brain health and protection against the development of diseases such as Alzheimer’s. While due to its ability to affect the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids preventing from the cellular oxidative damage, it is considered to modulate immune functions. Selenium is an essential trace element providing anti-oxidant and immune functions and reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. L-Carnitine plays an important role in lipid metabolism and in energy production, while it seems to have a protective effect against cardiac disorders. Finally, a potentially effective therapeutic agent in the treatment of heart failure is L-Arginine, an amino acid which found to improve patients’ functional status.
